6 Tips to Ace Your Next Video Interview

ace your next job interview online

With countries all over the world enforcing social distancing in response to the coronavirus, many businesses have had to shift operations online. Recruitment activities are no exception: in fact, the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) reports that leading employers like Facebook, Amazon, and Google had switched to virtual interviews as early as March.

In Singapore, where circuit breaker measures remain in effect, a video interview is likely the only option for companies looking to hire. For jobseekers, this shift presents unique challenges. To help candidates navigate these challenges successfully, SMU’s Postgraduate Career Services team has compiled the following tips and reminders.

1.  Keep your eye on the goal

Preparing for a new interview format is important, but don’t let that distract you from the main goal: making a great impression that brings you closer to your target job. Whether virtual or in-person, the interview will probably involve the same questions and talking points.

In short, as with in-person interviews, research and practice remain your best friends. Review the details of the position; research the company, including recent news or milestones; and practice your answers to common interview questions.

2.  Test your apps and devices

It’s always a good idea to give your video meeting platform a test run before the actual interview. Check that your internet connection is stable, and ensure that your device’s camera, microphone, and audio are working well.

In case of technical issues, ensure that your interviewer has other ways to contact you, e.g., through other messaging apps or via a call on your mobile phone.

3.  Prepare your surroundings

Unlike an in-person meeting, a video interview involves some blurring of the boundary between home and work. Try to project as professional an image as possible: aim for neutral backgrounds, good lighting, and minimal distractions. Inform family members so they can be mindful of your space, too.

Mute notifications and close any unnecessary programmes. Video interviews give you the opportunity to keep notes on hand, but don’t just read these word-for-word. Otherwise, you’ll look stiff and awkward.

4.  Dress to impress

Projecting a professional image entails dressing the part, too. Even if you’re attending the interview from home, put together an outfit that you would wear to an in-person meeting anyway.

Choose a colour that blends with your complexion and contrasts well with your background. Avoid distracting accessories and steer clear of overly bright or shiny materials.

5.  Watch your body language

Ensure that your device’s camera is at eye level and do your best to look at the camera—not the screen! This ensures good eye contact with your interviewer. Consider putting a sticker or other small, brightly coloured material beside your camera to serve as a visual cue.

Avoid fidgeting, slouching, or making too many gestures. This can be distracting, especially since video calls often tend to render quick motions poorly onscreen.

6.  Be your best self

Virtual conversations can easily feel flat or robotic, so do your best to relax and let your personality shine through. Interviews are a conversation, not a formal presentation—and certainly not an interrogation. Be genuine, convey your enthusiasm for the position, and always remember to thank the interviewer for their time.
