Caleb Tan (2nd from right) found the classroom discussions of his SMU MBA classes to be incredibly enriching.
Embarking on a postgraduate degree programme can be a powerful step towards career progression.
For Caleb Tan, pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) was not just about career advancement. It was about stretching beyond his comfort zone, gaining perspectives outside of his industry, and growing into a more well-rounded leader.
Why SMU: A purposeful decision
Coming from the pharmaceutical industry, Caleb felt it was the right time to broaden his horizons. He sought an MBA that offered more than theory; he wanted a programme that would expose him to diverse minds, provide learning opportunities with peers, and challenge his worldview.
“After five years in my first job, I wanted to broaden my perspective. I wanted to meet people I wouldn’t usually encounter, learn beyond my job scope, and refine my skillsets to become a stronger leader.”
At SMU, he found that space — a dynamic environment where professors encouraged class participation, and valuable peer learning.
Forming friendships through intense MBA classes
Soon after Caleb’s MBA kicked off in January 2024, he realised a compromise had to be made.
“I didn’t have time to catch up with my friends for half a year. The MBA became my social life,” he recalls with a laugh.
The intense three-and-a-half-hour classes became Caleb’s new social rhythm. At the same time, it was through these classes that Caleb found new friends, united by the same hectic schedules and shared ambitions.
Balancing work, studies, and a newborn
Caleb’s journey reached its most demanding point when his son, Leo, was born — right in the middle of the exam season.
“He was born in October when I was due to take an Organisational Behaviour exam. Fortunately, the school allowed me to take it later. This meant I could be fully present when my son arrived.”
That flexibility was emblematic of SMU’s support for adult learners. His managers and teammates at work were also incredibly supportive — reminding him to log off for class and checking in on his studies, including taking an interest in his finance modules.
Caleb credits time management and family support as essential factors in helping him navigate his MBA journey, with his partner being his main cheerleader when he had to attend classes on Saturdays.

A newfound community
The most unexpected part of Caleb’s journey was the friendships formed.
“Four of the students in my batch were dads. We shared advice, encouragement, and hand-me-downs, including baby essentials! We weren’t just learning about business management; we’re also supporting each other,” Caleb shares.
Beyond classroom collaboration, SMU has created a space for real connection — from rooftop networking nights to casual group chats that extended beyond the programme’s duration.
One of Caleb’s favourite moments was a social night at the Marquee at Marina Bay Sands. Organised by the SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business, the event offered postgraduate students a valuable opportunity to connect and unwind.

Exposure to diverse perspectives
Caleb also found the interactive learning approach at SMU to be very enriching. Unlike traditional lecture-heavy setups, seminar-style classes were held, encouraging discussions that invited collaborations, curiosity, and various perspectives.
“I came from a science background, where I was used to listening to the information in class. At SMU, you contribute to the class discussions. Not only do you learn from your classmates, the professors gain insights from your experience as well.”
Every module came with a new team, ensuring exposure to fresh perspectives and new networking opportunities that lead to lifelong friends.
The SMU MBA: More than a postgraduate programme
Caleb’s SMU MBA journey was a season of incredible growth, relentless juggling, and genuine connection. With the support of family, colleagues, and a close-knit community of classmates, he managed to thrive — not despite the challenges, but because of them.
“We still keep in touch and support each other to this day. That’s the SMU difference — the people stay with you, long after the course has ended.”
