The local real estate industry has historically relied on resource-intensive methods, leading to considerable expenses in delivering services and products. Despite the introduction of numerous technological solutions, there remains a substantial disparity between the adoption of technology and practical implementation.
As young leaders in the field, Alvin and Joanne recognise the pivotal role of digital transformation in reshaping the real estate industry, especially amid global challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic. This awareness propelled them to embark on the SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) Digital Transformation programme, a journey that not only enriched their careers but also deepened their relationship as a married couple.
Through the MITB programme, Alvin and Joanne delved into the multifaceted nature of digital transformation that extends beyond the confines of technology. From understanding and empathising with end-users to mastering the nuances of change management and global sourcing, they gained invaluable insights that reshaped their approach to problem-solving and enhanced their ability to value add.
Beyond acquiring technical skills, Alvin and Joanne cherished the collaborative and nurturing environment at SMU. The flexible curriculum allowed them to tailor their studies to their interests, while engaging with peers from diverse backgrounds enriched their learning experience.
Undoubtedly, pursuing postgraduate studies as a married couple posed its own set of challenges. Time and energy management tested their resilience, prompting them to embrace Agile practices in their studies as well as their daily lives. Through constant communication and mutual support, they found strength in each other, leveraging their shared passion and vision to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
During moments of respite, Alvin and Joanne found solace and joy in life's simple pleasures whether it be cooking together in their kitchen, taking leisurely walks, or watching Netflix in the evenings. These shared experiences not only strengthened their bond as partners but also rejuvenated their spirits amidst the demands of academic and professional pursuits.
Their advice to prospective students echoes their own journey: clarity on the objectives, expectations, and commitments. The journey will be arduous; however, the rewards are immeasurable – knowledge, skills, friendships, and a sense of fulfilment that transcends boundaries.
