Having graduated with an Aerospace Engineering degree and worked in the aerospace industry for almost seven years, I wanted to upskill myself in other areas such as Data Analytics. Despite having no experience in IT or analytics, I took the plunge to enrol in the Master of IT in Business (MITB) at SMU as a part-time student. Although it has been a very arduous journey having to juggle between work, family and part-time studies, it was an enriching experience as I learnt various analytical skills from the friendly and knowledgeable faculty.
The best part of the course includes the opportunity to meet and work with people from different industries and backgrounds, as there is a great emphasis on project work for every course on top of theoretical concepts that are being imparted. At the same time, I had the opportunity to work on a capstone project over a period of 10 months, which gave me first-hand experience in dealing with real-world analytics problems.
The SMU Career Services team also provided invaluable advice on resume writing, so I could sharpen my resume to highlight skills andknowledge gained throughout the programme.
My advice to prospective students – do not allow the lack of IT experience deter you from pursuing MITB, as the programme is structured to slowly build your skills and confidence before delving into the more technical aspects.
