Tan Yee Sen, a fourth-year SCIS Information Systems student, who is also in the fast-track Master of IT in Business (MITB) Analytics programme, recently represented SMU at the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (IEEE ICDM) in Shanghai, China last December 2023.

Yee Sen presented his paper titled “Video Sentiment Analysis for Child Safety”. The research focussed on child safety within the vast online content landscape of platforms like TikTok and YouTube, deploying a late-fusion multimodal approach that integrates text, image frames and audio to determine a video’s suitability for child consumption.

This research is significant just as it is timely as the Digital Services Act (DSA) that calls to Tech Giants to prevent harmful and illegal online content, was enacted in the EU in November 2023. The paper contributed to bolstering child safety measures in our digital world and served as a valuable resource for platforms and caregivers, offering enhanced tools to ensure a safer online environment for children. Its deliberate use of simpler models provides a practical and more accessible framework for those seeking to implement similar sentiment analysis techniques.

All work no play makes Jack a dull boy. Amidst the academic pursuits, Yee Sen also explored popular sites in Shanghai, including The Bund, Nanjing East Road and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and indulged in local culinary delights such as Xiao Long Bao and Sheng Jian Bao from Yang’s Dumplings.

Reflecting on the conference, Yee Sen shared, “meeting people from different countries and engaging in discussions about our work was a valuable experience. The suggestions and advice during the discussions emphasized the conference’s atmosphere of professional collaboration, which spurs me to further improve my work even more!”

Yee Sen expressed his gratitude to Associate Professor Wang Zhaoxia for her guidance, Ezekiel Ghe En Zhe, fourth year SCIS Information Systems student for his invaluable contributions to the paper, and SMU School of Computing and Information Systems and SMU Master of IT in Business for the partial funding and making this overseas conference trip possible!
