Geoffrey Charis Prasetyo
Master of IT in Business (Financial Technology & Analytics)
January 2024 Intake
My career has always revolved around building innovative tech solutions, from leading a software engineering team at Tokopedia, a ByteDance company, to driving fintech innovations at M-DAQ Global. I have built a strong technical foundation having earned a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Monash University, specialising in Software Development and Computer & Network Security. However, I wanted to bridge the gap between technology and business – understanding not just how to build fintech solutions but how to align them with market needs, regulatory frameworks, and financial strategies. That’s why I chose the Master of IT in Business (MITB) Financial Technology & Analytics programme at Singapore Management University.
Why SMU MITB?
MITB stood out because of its industry-driven curriculum and strong focus on fintech and analytics. The program provided the perfect opportunity to integrate my technical expertise with business acumen, preparing me to navigate the rapidly evolving digital finance landscape. Courses like Blockchain Applications, Data Science in Finance, and Risk & Regulatory Technology helped me deepen my understanding of structuring fintech solutions that are both innovative and commercially viable.
Beyond academics, SMU’s vibrant student community played a crucial role in my experience. Clubs like the Blockchain Club and Product Club regularly hosted industry leaders, offering valuable insights into Web3, digital payments, and product management. These networking opportunities helped me stay ahead of emerging trends and build connections with like-minded professionals.
Applying MITB Knowledge in My Career
One key takeaway from MITB has been a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance—an essential aspect of designing effective fintech solutions. In my current role at M-DAQ Global, I apply data analytics to optimize cross-border payment solutions and mitigate currency volatility risks. MITB has also sharpened my ability to assess fintech business models, enabling me to identify new market opportunities and drive product innovation.
Additionally, MITB has strengthen my expertise in Digital Product Management, equipping me with the knowledge to align technology with user needs with business goals. Courses on Big Data and Analytical Tools have been particularly valuable in handling large datasets, extracting insights and applying predictive analytics to fintech solutions. Furthermore, Data Science in Finance has equipped me with skills to leverage machine learning and quantitative models for risk assessment, fraud detection, and investment analysis.
These skills have been crucial in developing innovative financial products and improving decision-making in my current role.
A Standout Experience
One of the most memorable experiences at MITB was working on a sustainability-focused digital project, where my team explored how blockchain and IoT could enhance supply chain transparency. This project provided an opportunity to apply fintech concepts in an unconventional context, highlighting how digital innovations can drive positive impact across industries.
Internship at UOB: Gaining Banking Industry Insights
During my internship at UOB’s Technology & Operations division, I contributed to upgrading the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and automating operational workflows. This experience honed my skills in IT infrastructure transformation, database management, and regulatory compliance. It also provided valuable exposure to banking deployment processes, an essential aspect of software development in financial institutions.
What I Enjoy Most About MITB
The interactive learning environment at SMU has been incredibly enriching. Case-based discussions challenge students to think critically and develop well-rounded solutions that balance technical feasibility with business objectives. The diverse cohort of professionals from different industries also brings unique perspectives, making classroom discussions more insightful.
Another highlight is the accessibility of industry insights through guest speaker events and networking sessions. Learning directly from fintech experts, product managers, and startup founders has given me a deeper understanding of market trends and career opportunities.
Advice for Prospective MITB Students
If you’re considering MITB, come in with a clear goal. The program is intense so having a strong sense of purpose will help you maximize your learning experience. Be proactive in networking—interacting with peers, alumni, and industry professionals can open up unexpected opportunities. Lastly, take advantage of student clubs and industry events to stay ahead in emerging fields like Web3, digital banking, AI, and fintech innovation.
