Jennifer Shi
Master of IT in Business (Financial Technology & Analytics)
January 2024 Intake
As an international student with a background in management and digital innovation, my professional journey has been deeply intertwined with technology and its potential to refine business strategies and drive societal progress. My roles have ranged from growth analysis to payment operations within the fintech sector, leading to my current position as a Functional Business Analyst at UOB. In this role, I am dedicated to effectively bridge technology and business process improvements through comprehensive software development lifecycle (SDLC) management.
Inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s belief that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”, I decided to pursue further education at SMU's Master of IT in Business (MITB). The programme’s global reach, extensive curriculum, and diverse specialisations in Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Financial Technology and Analytics immediately captured my interest.
My decision to specialise in Financial Technology and Analytics stemmed from a deep interest in finance and the transformative power of data in today’s digital landscape. At SMU MITB, I have been able to apply cutting-edge technologies, such as SAS Viya to develop transformation strategies that align perfectly with my aspirations. The programme has been instrumental in sharpening my analytical skills, enabling me to make informed, data-driven decisions that streamline business processes. The hands-on experience I've gained by working with real-life data in assignments and projects has significantly enriched my understanding of both the technical and strategic aspects of the fintech industry.
Additionally, the professors at MITB, who are among the top in their fields, go beyond conventional teaching. Their willingness to share personal experiences and practical insights in class has provided me with a profound and meaningful understanding of the industry. Their insights have not only strengthened my academic foundation but also enhanced my industry knowledge, preparing me to confidently and creatively tackle complex challenges.
One of the key highlights has been the overseas study mission (OSM). SMU offers OSMs to various countries, and I had the opportunity to participate in one to Bangkok, Thailand, led by Professor Prasart Jongjaroenkamol. This journey was not only academically enriching but also significantly broadened my global perspective. Visiting places like Thailand’s first and largest brewery allowed us to explore international business strategies and understand local market dynamics up close. This experience not only deepened my professional knowledge but also fostered lasting friendships and a profound respect for diverse business cultures.
Studying at SMU is more than just acquiring knowledge; it’s about growing in a nurturing environment where each student's voice is heard. The small class sizes foster a close-knit community and provide personalised learning experiences, enhancing both academic and personal growth.
To prospective students considering the MITB programme, I encourage you to embrace the wealth of opportunities that SMU offers. From engaging in cutting-edge projects to participating in global exchanges, the experiences you gain here will equip you with advanced technical skills and a strategic mindset – critical tools in today's rapidly evolving business landscape. It will be a transformative experience that prepares you for future challenges and opportunities in the global market.
