Kathleen Koh
Master of IT in Business (Artificial Intelligence)
January 2024 Intake
My educational background is in economics, complemented with over a decade of professional experience at a local bank. During this time, I worked in various areas of banking, most notably in market risk and asset-liability risk management. A hiatus from work to focus on my family unexpectedly led me to develop an interest in data science, sparked by the advent of online courses. This interest was further nurtured through postgraduate diplomas in this field.
A professional master’s degree was the next logical step, which led me to pursue the SMU Master of IT in Business part-time. I recently began working in data science with a real estate fractional ownership platform company, where I can apply what I learn. Additionally, I teach piano and music theory part-time.
Before deciding on the MITB programme, I considered two other comparable programmes offered by reputable institutions. However, SMU stood out to me due to its flexible and comprehensive curriculum, convenient city-centre location, and the timing of the classes. The smooth and efficient application process also played a role in my decision.
The MITB programme has been highly enriching. The modules are well-taught, and I particularly enjoyed the exciting algorithm design course and the intriguing quantum computing course, both of which opened new worlds of knowledge to me. The programme offers a wide variety of modules to choose from, including courses from all four MITB tracks (Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Financial Technology & Analytics) as well as open electives from other SMU faculties.
Beyond taught modules, students have the option to undertake an internship (for full-time students) or a capstone project. The latter allows students to explore their particular areas of interest under the supervision of experienced faculty members, providing them an excellent opportunity to build a portfolio.
In the AI track, students are introduced to the faculty’s research areas which broadens our perspectives on developing areas in AI. The course instructors and teaching assistants are generally accessible, approachable, responsive and diligent in answering students' questions. I appreciate their efforts not only in imparting knowledge but also motivating us and piquing our interests in their respective fields.
The SMU experience extends beyond academics. Postgraduate workshops have provided new perspectives and soft skills such as handling interpersonal conflicts and working in teams, as well as practical skills such as maximising SMU’s extensive library resources. There are constant invitations to various internal or external talks, workshops, webinars and events. A particularly interesting series I attended online was about using AI in research.
SMU also organises seasonal social events throughout the year. For example, a recent event allowed us to enjoy quality durians while mingling with fellow students and MITB staff, fostering a sense of community within the programme.
MITB has certainly boosted my confidence in applying my learning at work. The blend of theory and application is oriented towards practical and thoughtful use in real-world scenarios. My advice to prospective students is to be prepared to learn beyond the classroom, participate as fully as possible and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow students as you navigate the rigours of the programme together, with the goal of a renewed or enhanced career.
