I have been working in the areas of IT and AI product management which made me keenly aware of the rapid advancements in data science and AI. With a background in business administration, I realized the need for a deeper dive into technical realms.  While there are abundance of online courses and bootcamps, I chose to pursue a formal master’s degree at SMU because of its practical approach, hands-on learning, and networking opportunities. The Master of IT in Business (MITB) focuses on fundamental principles of data analytics and data science, which lays a crucial foundation for my journey. MITB’s stellar reputation in Asia and its global ranking, coupled with Singapore’s status as being a tech and financial hub further solidified my decision.

Currently, I am a co-founder of Rezumagic, a tech startup that harnesses data and AI to support job seekers throughout their job search journey. In my role, I wear multiple hats – from data engineer setting the data pipelines to data scientist researching tools and technology, to a product manager defining the product vision.

The MITB programme has been instrumental in bridging my knowledge gaps about data science and influencing my strategies in building my start-up. Navigating in the IT field can be challenging as there is so much information online, and it is easy to get lost in the internet jungle without a solid grasp of fundamentals and an analytical mindset. Today, I can adeptly leverage data analytics skills acquired from MITB to fine-tune my product, implementing metrics, benchmarks, and processing logic to evaluate and classify user data. Having the technical acumen has also helped in networking and communicating with vendors.

During my time in the MITB programme, I seized the chance to join the Antai Global Summer programme at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which provided invaluable insights into China's rich culture, dynamic economy, and intricate business practices. Inspired by this experience, I am currently learning Mandarin and hope to revisit Shanghai in the future.

To future MITB students: Try your best and take good care of your health, physically and mentally, so you can persevere and enjoy your studies. Embrace the highs and lows, forge meaningful connections and remember to find joy beyond academia. Wishing you all the best on your MITB journey!
