Wee Teck wanted to make a career change from operations management to data analytics. The SMU MITB (Analytics Track) gave him a good foundation in data analytics in terms of knowledge and skills and exposed him to both the latest developments in the industry as well as a network of professionals.
Through the various projects in the programme, he had to deal with new challenges and apply the skills and knowledge that he learnt through the course of his studies. Through his internship, he saw the relevance of data analytics to a company and its performance.
“My biggest takeaway has been that, data analytics is really both an art and a science; to do well in it, one needs an ensemble of hard (technical) and soft (business) skills. I think that there is a shortage of talent in this field, and that could be a reason why analytics has not caught on fully in this part of the world,” said Wee Teck.
