My journey into the realm of data analytics has been fueled by a fascination with its potential to inform business decisions, tackle complex problems and foster innovation. Building on my academic and professional background in business, I sought to deepen my knowledge by applying to SMU’s Master of IT in Business (MITB) Analytics programme, drawn by its renowned faculty, rigorous curriculum, and innovative pedagogy.
The MITB programme has been instrumental in facilitating my career transition, offering invaluable networking opportunities with industry professionals and insightful sharing sessions by MITB alumni. I also had the opportunity to intern at Changi Airport Group as an Enterprise Data Analyst which provided me with hands-on experience in AI/Analytics projects, particularly in using a machine learning model for predicting taxi demand.
The most rewarding aspect of the programme is the opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds which broadens my perspectives and fosters a dynamic learning environment. I deeply appreciate the openness of my professors to feedback and their willingness to share their extensive industry experience. Their encouragement to us to be curious and their dedication to preparing us for real-world challenges have been invaluable.
Looking ahead, I aim to secure a data analyst position at a reputable tech company, leveraging the knowledge and skills gained from the MITB programme. Additionally, I hope to give back by volunteering at a nonprofit organization, providing pro bono analytics services to small businesses.
To future MITB students, I offer this advice: embrace the fast-paced learning journey, seize every opportunity for learning and growth. Take advantage of the workshops to expand your knowledge, and most importantly, mingle with your classmates and the broader SMU community to maximise your experience.
