With a background in financial services, specialising in client services and middle-office roles, I sought to expand my capabilities by bridging my finance expertise with technology. The Master of IT in Business programme at SMU provides the ideal platform for acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to make this transition.
What sets the MITB programme apart for me is its diverse specialisations and comprehensive curriculum. Whilst I can specialise in FinTech and Analytics, the programme offers flexibility to explore courses outside my chosen track. This provides me with a holistic understanding of emerging areas critical to the financial technology sector. This tailored approach has allowed me to align my learning with current industry trends, ensuring that the knowledge I’ve gained is both relevant and practical.
The MITB programme emphasises on experiential learning which allow students the opportunity to do an internship or capstone project, join an overseas study trip and participate in networking events. Engaging with professors who bring extensive industry experience and learning from guest speakers has further enriched my perspective on the dynamic FinTech landscape.
One memorable aspect of my MITB journey has been the MITB mentorship programme. As an introvert, participating in these events challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. Connecting with my mentor provided invaluable guidance and support that have significantly shaped both my professional and personal growth. Even after the mentorship period ended, we remained in touch and have since become good friends.
Collaborating with peers from different backgrounds has been a valuable experience. It helped me improve my technical and problem-solving abilities whilst also boosting my communication and teamwork. I’ve learned to build strong relationships and work effectively with people from various cultures. These experiences will undoubtedly serve me well as I take on strategic roles in the fast-changing FinTech sector.
I highly encourage prospective students to enroll with an open mind. Take advantage of MITB’s broad offerings and engage actively in networking events. The MITB programme has been a transformative experience, arming me with the skills and mindset required to excel in a technology-driven financial ecosystem. I look forward to leveraging the knowledge and exposure I've gained in roles that could contribute to the future of FinTech.
