Diana Kuleshova

Master of IT in Business (Digital Transformation)
January 2024 Intake

I’m Diana Kuleshova, a Project Management professional at EPAM Systems, where I drive innovative IT solutions and manage dynamic projects. With an academic foundation in Economics and Management from the National Research University Higher School of Economics, I sought a programme that bridges business strategy with cutting-edge technology. That’s when I found SMU’s Master of IT in Business (MITB)—a programme that has exceeded my expectations.

Choosing MITB was an easy decision. Its forward-thinking curriculum ensures students stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies. The Digital Transformation track, in particular, felt like an extension of my professional world, allowing me to immediately apply classroom insights to real-world IT challenges. Learning from faculty with experience at global giants like Google, Amazon, and Gartner was an unparalleled opportunity. But what truly sets SMU apart is its seminar-style learning, where students are encouraged to actively participate, challenge ideas, and engage in meaningful discussions. This dynamic approach deeply aligns resonates with me, as I strongly believe critical thinking, collaboration, and open dialogue are the foundations of a transformative education.

MITB has been a game-changer in my career. Beyond acquiring technical expertise, I’ve had the privilege of networking with brilliant professionals from diverse industries. Engaging with peers from both public and private sectors expanded my perspective on business strategies and best practices. The collaborative nature of MITB’s projects honed my leadership and teamwork skills, preparing me to thrive in high-performing environments.

One impactful experience was applying concepts from the Design Thinking course by Prof. Hoe Siu Loon. While working on an RFP (Request for Proposal) at EPAM, I collaborated with my Digital Engagement department to propose innovative UI/UX enhancements for a global hotel chain. This real-world application reinforced how immediately relevant and valuable MITB’s curriculum is.

Another defining moment was taking Business Applications of Digital Technology with Prof. Darren Thayre. His groundbreaking approach—having students compare AI-generated proposals with their original work—pushed us to think critically about technologies like Generative AI, Cloud, Mixed Reality, and IoT. But what truly made this class unforgettable was experiencing these technologies firsthand. We had Meta experts as guest speakers who demonstrated the latest in Mixed Reality, allowing us to test Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Meta Quest headsets—a thrilling glimpse into the future of digital engagement.

Beyond academics, MITB offers unparallelled global exposure. I had the opportunity to participate in the Doing Business in Indonesia Overseas Study Mission, in collaboration with ITS University. This immersive experience went beyond textbooks—I explored local business practices, learned Indonesian business etiquette, and even picked up some of the language. A serendipitous highlight was reconnecting with students from my alma mater, Higher School of Economics University, who were also part of the programme. If you have the chance to participate in an OSM, don’t hesitate—it’s an incredible way to gain hands-on international business exposure.

MITB is defined by its outstanding faculty, and one professor who left a lasting impact on me is Mr Wong Yuet Nan, who teaches Digital Transformation Strategy. Beyond the classroom, he took the time to provide personalized career guidance, which has been instrumental in shaping my professional trajectory. His words of wisdom still resonate with me: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” A timeless reminder for navigating both career and life.

The true heart of the MITB programme lies in its people. The diverse, driven, and inspiring individuals I’ve met here—from Singapore and beyond—have made this journey truly unforgettable. Whether brainstorming over group projects or sharing insights over coffee, the friendships and connections I’ve formed are invaluable. My go-to campus hangout? The Li Ka Shing Library—where I spend most of my time preparing for quizzes, exams, and collaborating on group projects with my classmates. The atmosphere is just right for the perfect blend of focus and energy that sets the right mood for productive learning.

With a unique ability to merge IT expertise with business strategy, we are well-positioned to lead digital transformation initiatives across industries. This competitive edge ensures that MITB alumni will continue to make an impact in an ever-evolving job market. If you’re considering MITB—go for it! Stay curious, embrace new experiences, and push your boundaries. If you’re juggling a full-time job while studying, know that it’s challenging—but absolutely worth it. Step out of your comfort zone, leverage the programme’s networking opportunities, and most importantly, follow your dreams. Your journey at MITB will be nothing short of extraordinary!
