My career began in food science, but my passion for data transformed it entirely. After graduating from NUS with a degree in Food Science and Technology, I started as a food technologist specializing in oils and fats. After the Covid pandemic, I developed an interest in data science through MOOCs and joined an agri-food tech startup, ProfilePrint, as a food scientist. As I worked alongside data-driven solutions, I saw firsthand the power of AI—but also recognised my knowledge gaps. Determined to bridge them, I immersed myself in Python and data science, transitioning from a food scientist to a data scientist. Today, as a senior data scientist, I develop AI modules for our business platform to enhance user decision-making — combining my passion for food science with the limitless possibilities of technology.
Pursuing a master’s degree at SMU MITB was a strategic decision. While I had hands-on experience in data science, I encountered challenges related to dataset complexity, scalability, and gaps in my foundational knowledge. MITB’s emphasis on real-world applications and industry collaboration was the perfect fit. The interactive, discussion-based learning style also appealed to me, helping refine both my technical expertise and communication skills—critical in my role where I translate AI-driven insights into business value.
MITB has been instrumental in elevating my capabilities. Courses like AI Planning and Decision Making have reshaped how I approach business challenges, enabling me to optimise solutions effectively. In Visualisation Analytics, I developed more impactful data visualizations, enhancing stakeholder decision-making. Computational Interaction expanded my repertoire of modelling techniques, giving me fresh perspectives when developing AI solutions at work.
One of my most memorable experiences was an SMU-X project where my team collaborated with a seafood company on a digital transformation initiative. The highlight of this experience was a midnight tour of Jurong Fishery Port, where we witnessed firsthand the industry's operations in the early hours before heading back to a Saturday morning class! Despite the lack of sleep, the experience was deeply rewarding. With the guidance of our professors and numerous iterations of our proposal, our team secured the runner-up position at the project showcase.
Beyond academics, MITB has introduced me to a community of brilliant and driven individuals. Engaging with peers from diverse backgrounds—especially those from the Digital Transformation (DT) track—has been incredibly inspiring. Their strategic thinking and ability to articulate complex ideas have pushed me to improve, and I’m grateful for the friendships formed along the way. Some of us have collaborated on multiple projects and even participated in hackathons together, making the journey even more fulfilling.
I deeply appreciate the dedication of MITB’s faculty. Many stay back late after class to address students’ questions, demonstrating their commitment to our learning. Their guidance has been invaluable, shaping my understanding of AI and its broader applications.
For those considering MITB, my advice is simple: be prepared for an intense but rewarding journey. Step out of your comfort zone, embrace challenging projects, and make the most of the incredible learning environment.
