Taking a break from work to enrol myself in the full-time MITB programme from SMU was one of the most difficult decisions I have made, but it is also one of the most fulfilling chapters in my life. Coming from an engineering background in the offshore & marine industry, I had minimal training in programming and data analytics. However, the MITB programme offers a breadth of courses including foundational ones such as Data Analytics Lab, Applied Statistical Analysis and Spreadsheet Modelling, which helped to build my foundation for advanced courses such as Applied Machine Learning and Operations Analytics. Besides analytical courses, MITB also offers other domain-specific courses such as Big Data, Cybersecurity and IoT Technology, which are very relevant in the current technology landscape today. With a wide variety of courses offered, students are given the flexibility in choosing courses based on their interests, as well as their career aspirations. What I like most about the programme is the focus on group projects with an emphasis on business use cases with real-world applications. Through this, I had the opportunity to work with course mates from different work backgrounds and I appreciate the different perspectives brought to the table. Thanks to the MITB programme, I was able to make a career switch from project management to data science by landing a role as a Data Scientist with AirAsia. Therefore, I would highly recommend this programme to anyone who wants to venture into the world of data analytics, regardless of your background and career stage.
