What made you decide on SMU and Singapore for your postgraduate studies?
Singapore is the bridge between the East and the West, it has the modern infrastructure and the best government to attract businesses and talents, which means the availability of good job opportunities. For most Asian students, especially the Chinese, Singapore is closer to home as compared to other popular overseas study destinations. SMU is the best business school in Singapore, so it is an easy choice once you have decided on Singapore.
Why did you choose the MPA?
I chose the MPA for 3 reasons. Firstly, it’s prestige as the SMU MPA programme is one of the most recognised accounting programmes in Asia. Secondly, SMU has earned a reputation as the best business school in Singapore. My local and foreign friends who have been long-time residents in Singapore recommended SMU to me when I had offers from both SMU and NTU. Lastly, SMU MPA graduates have a better than average rate for placement upon graduation.
How did the actual SMU experience meet your expectations?
SMU exceeded my expectations in so many ways such as the quality in its education and the rigorous exams that really challenge you. The faculty members who remain as friends and support you even after your graduation. And most importantly, the diverse network you build with your classmates - my class had 28 people from 13 different countries.
Did you experience any challenging times during your postgraduate studies?
I was challenged in the Financial Accounting (FA) class taught by Prof Themin Suwardy. I started the MPA programme very relaxed however when I received a C grade on the first FA programme, I was in shock and tried to challenge the grade but decided to accept it when the A+ reports were shown in class. I started to put more effort in my studies and eventually got an A for this course and I was also on the Dean’s list upon graduation.
How has the SMU MPA prepared you to thrive in your career?
MPA students enjoy exemptions for all the foundational papers in the Singapore CPA which is at least five papers and that was a great weight off my shoulders. The consolidation from advanced financial accounting is extremely helpful when we audit group consolidation.
What advice do you have for prospective international students?
Technical writing skills, communication and networking skills are very important for your career, it is essential to intentionally sharpen those areas. If you decide that Singapore is the country for your postgraduate studies and you are looking for a business school, SMU is the best choice.
