What drew you to choose SMU? What were your expectations, if any being part of the inaugural SMU MSA batch in 2018?
I am a chartered accountant and work in internal audit. Having been in the industry for a couple of years, I noticed an increasing emphasis on the usage of data, and decided to search for a course to upgrade my analytics skill.
What draws me to choose SMU is the interactive pedagogy. I was intrigued that MSA goes deep into its application with accounting and data technology.
Did you experience any challenging times during your postgraduate studies? How did you overcome the adversities?
Due to a serious illness, I had to defer my studies in term 1 and was on sabbatical leave from work. My employer and family gave me the support and space to recuperate. I made adjustments to my lifestyle, diet, exercise and sleep. After a full recovery, I joined the 2019 batch.
How has the SMU MSA helped to prepare you to thrive in your career in audit?
SMU-X is one of the most rigorous courses as it requires me to synthesis all we have learnt and work on real business projects. I acquired the skills to integrate business and data technology. Thus giving me the edge to solve a wider range of business issues and create more value and a greater impact at work. Data technology is a key enabler to digital transformation. The skills gained not only allowed me to move laterally from an individual contributor to a people manager role, leading a team of data analysts and also ability to communicate & work effectively with fellow tech professionals in the organisation.
