As recipients of the UOB-SMU MSA Scholarship, David Djapri and Zhang Tong Tong had the opportunity to complete a 10-week internship in UOB’s Data Management Office (DMO) during their summer break. We asked David and Tongtong to share their exciting internship experience as budding data analysts.
David Djapri
Master of Science in Accounting (Data & Analytics) (MSA), 2018 August Intake
David started his internship with the data partnership team with UOB’s Data Management Office, where he supported various business units across the Bank to drive business intelligence through insights harnessed from data.
“One of my responsibilities was to build PowerBI Dashboards to enable UOB’s business units to view relevant and quality data that would support their project objectives. In building these dashboards, I was able to tap best practices of dashboard design which I had learnt in the first semester of my Master of Science in Accounting (Data & Analytics) programme,” David shared.
After spending about seven weeks with the data partnership team, David then joined the Enterprise AI Strategy (EAI) team as part of his internship rotation. His role with EAI Strategy was to develop a corporate portal where colleagues can learn about data science and collaborate with the data science team. The portal serves as a one-stop learning resource for all employees in UOB to learn, to collaborate and to ask questions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
“In my collaboration with stakeholders within the business to help them tap the benefits of data science, I have developed a greater appreciation for the importance of data storytelling. The ability to communicate well is key to ensuring that a data science project succeeds,” David said.
Zhong Tong Tong
Master of Science in Accounting (Data & Analytics) (MSA), 2018 August Intake
For the first six weeks, Tong Tong interned with UOB’s AI Capability team within the Bank’s Data Management Office, where she was tasked with Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) – a common practice for data science professionals to harness insights from real-world datasets.
“Using what I have learnt from EDA projects in school and at UOB, I was able to design the structures needed to perform data analysis and to gather insights from data,” Tong Tong shared.
As part of her internship rotation, Tong Tong then joined UOB’s AI Strategy team where she researched the use of AI and cloud technology within the global banking industry.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to intern at UOB. Besides learning about the banking industry, I could apply what I have learnt in MSA to translate data into actionable insights for the Bank,” Tong Tong said.
