Bridging the Fields of Data Science and Economics

3 Min SMU INSIDER: Alumni

Navigating the path to success requires diverse skillsets, varying across roles and industries. However, a steadfast commitment towards continuous improvement remains a constant theme, whether it involves deepening expertise or broadening experience in different domains.

For Karen Riady, a postgraduate student currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Economics (MSE) programme at SMU’s School of Economics (SOE), this commitment is a driving force.

Karen’s journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Statistic and Data Science from another university, leading her to don multiple hats as a product analyst and creator partnership manager at TikTok, ByteDance.

Her work at the highly popular and widely used social media platform involved the development and implementation of TikTok’s various strategic marketing campaigns. Karen’s responsibilities also saw her analysing user-engagement data, gleaning insights which were used to enhance the user experience of TikTok Shop.

After pondering on her career aspirations, Karen decided to shift her focus from data science to pursue new knowledge in economics — an area that had caught her interest during her undergraduate studies. Delving into the analysis of economic phenomena in the modern world opened up new opportunities for more interesting roles in her future.

While the two fields might seem disparate, Karen views her professional experience as an asset that enriches her MSE learning experience. “My multifaceted responsibilities allowed me to develop my analytical and strategic thinking skills,” she affirms.

Integrating practical experience with academic learning

Elaborating on how her working experience adds to this next chapter of her academic journey, she shares, “The practical insights gained from analysing real-world economic trends and user behaviour in the e-commerce industry provided valuable context to the theoretical concepts covered in the coursework.”

“This synergy between academic knowledge and practical experience enhances my ability to apply economic principles in a more tangible context.”

Karen views the MSE programme as a pivotal step for her career, both in how it broadens existing skillsets, and also how the knowledge gained equips her to navigate the complex economic landscapes ahead.

While her undergraduate studies introduced her to the basics of how economies work, the desire for in-depth knowledge and sharper analytical skills propelled Karen onto her MSE adventure.

Reaping the fruits of the MSE learning journey

Karen might only be a few months into her journey, but she has already garnered invaluable insights. She talks about how mastering the ability of critically analysing economic data and trends will allow her to make informed decisions confidently.

“The emphasis on research methodologies has honed my skills in conducting thorough and impactful economic analyses,” she says. “The MSE programme has also fostered a collaborative mindset through group projects, enhancing my ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.”

With more in-depth modules to look forward to in the months to come, Karen is eagerly anticipating her classes. “I am particularly looking forward to modules that delve into emerging trends in economic policy and the application of advanced econometric techniques.”

“These modules align with my background and offer an opportunity to explore cutting-edge developments in the field. I am also deeply intrigued by modules involving the legal aspect of world economics, as they play a crucial role in influencing the intersection of law and economic activities on a global scale.

“I see the MSE programme as an experience that will open doors to new opportunities for me in most fields,” she states.

On navigating success

For prospective students of the MSE programme, Karen encourages them to keep their career objectives in mind. “Carefully assess your career goals and how the programme aligns with you. Seek opportunities for practical application of theoretical concepts through internships or real-world projects.

“Additionally, actively engage with professors and your fellow peers, and make use of the networking opportunities provided by SMU to build a robust professional network. Stay open to diverse perspectives, as programmes like the MSE offer a wealth of knowledge that can be enriched through collaborative learning experiences.”
