If you’ve ever felt that tug – a quiet but persistent voice saying it’s time to build something of your own, or “I want to lead innovation, not just read about it” - then the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship & Innovation (MEI) at SMU may just be the catalyst you’ve been waiting for.
Because here’s the truth Professor David Gomulya (Academic Director of MEI) shared with a room full of aspiring founders and innovators:
“Learning to be an entrepreneur trains you for life. It’s like preparing for an ultramarathon - once you can handle that, everything else becomes easier.”
And that’s exactly what the MEI programme is built to do: equip you with the mindset, toolbox, network and resilience to thrive in a world that’s transforming faster than ever.
Singapore: A Global Innovation Hotspot - and You’ll Be Studying at its Epicentre
Let’s start with the backdrop.
Singapore isn’t just a good place to study entrepreneurship - it’s one of the world’s fastest-rising innovation hubs. Ranked #12 globally among entrepreneurial cities and climbing, Singapore has become a magnet for VCs, angels, tech founders, deep-tech pioneers and global corporates.
When you step into SMU, you’re literally studying in the heart of it all:
- A 15-minute walk from Parliament, the National Gallery, the business district
- Next door to the innovation corridors where deals are done and ideas collide
- Surrounded by F1 race energy, Marina Bay Sands, and regional HQs of global tech giants
In a session, Professor David reminisces on his experiences from attending SWITCH, Singapore’s flagship innovation and tech conference: “Entrepreneurship momentum in Singapore isn’t slowing down. If anything, it’s accelerating.” And when opportunity accelerates, you want to be exactly where the action is.

Future-Ready Skills: What the World Needs → What Entrepreneurs Already Train For
During the session, Prof. David asked participants a simple question: What skills will the future demand?
Their answers echoed what McKinsey has published on “Future Citizen Skills”:
- Critical thinking
- Communication
- Creativity
- Resilience
- Problem-solving
- Digital fluency
- Empathy
- Flexibility
Then came the follow-up question – one that made everyone stop and think: “Can you be a successful entrepreneur without these skills?”
Participants attending the session unanimously said “no” - And that’s the insight at the core of the MEI programme:
- Training as an entrepreneur goes beyond preparing you to start a company because it focuses on preparing you to excel in any future.
- Corporate innovation, product management, business development, VC, family business leadership, even public sector roles - they all demand the exact same future-proof skillset - which means whether or not you ever start your own company, MEI upgrades your professional trajectory.

SMU MEI Students During the Global Immersion Programme
A Classroom That Feels More Like a Startup Lab
SMU is known (and loved) for its highly interactive, discussion-driven classroom style. But MEI takes it a step further because entrepreneurship can’t be learned purely from textbooks.
Here’s what “learning by doing” actually looks like inside the programme:
- Venture Building Experience - your year-long startup journey
You begin with ideation → team formation → prototyping → go-to-market strategy → pitching to judges. Every student participates, whether you bring your own idea or join someone else’s. - Mentoring & Exposure - You’re mentored by leaders, industry mentors who are real operators, VCs and the like. This translates to hands-on mentorship from people who have built, scaled and exited businesses. In fact, in the past our students have been mentored by pioneer entrepreneurs, former Members of Parliament, individuals listed on SGX & NASDAQ, co-founders of highly valued startups, early investors, entrepreneurs from education, deep-tech, healthcare, finance, logistics and beyond.
- Prototyping funds – The MEI programme encourages student teams to receive seed money to actually build something. No equity, just support.
- A global immersion in London (with UCL) – This offers students a chance to pitch to VCs based in the UK, visit companies like Google, attend networking events, and experience innovation ecosystems beyond Asia. Students will also earn a certificate of completion from University College London.
- Optional term exchanges in London or Berlin - Since innovation is global, we believe your exposure should also be completely immersive and offer students a chance to complete exchange programmes in London or Berlin to gain exposure from the Western markets.
The People You’ll Study With: Diverse, Driven, Entrepreneurial
SMU’s MEI isn’t what we like to call a typical master’s cohort. This is because as a student, you’ll be learning alongside:
- Family business leaders (some from publicly listed companies)
- Military leaders transitioning to entrepreneurship
- Tech developers building products in VR, AI, automotive, fintech
- Corporate professionals with 10–30 years' experience
- International students from Japan, Brazil, France, India, China, Indonesia, Korea, the US, and more
The cohort’s age range spans early-20s to mid-40s. Backgrounds range from psychology to logistics to software engineering to design to finance. This makes it a diverse, dynamic and energizing place to study – something we know entrepreneurship should feel like.
And Yes, People Actually Build Real Companies Here
With over 20–30 startups having emerged from Prof. David’s classes alone, SMU MEI’s recent success stories include founders whose companies:
- Hit multimillion-dollar valuations
- Secured VC funding
- Entered top incubators
- Expanded across industries like healthcare, sustainability, logistics, and fintech
And here’s a number that turns heads: 64% of MEI student teams get accepted into SMU’s in-house incubator - 4X higher than walk-ins.
Why?
Because they’ve been rigorously coached, mentored and trained to build something investors believe in.
Incubation also gives international students a startup visa for up to two years, enabling them to grow their company right here in Singapore.

Admissions, Scholarships & Support - Designed to Empower You
What makes SMU stand out is not just the programme but how supported students feel throughout the journey.
- Application process that’s faster than most master’s programmes
- Most applicants complete admissions within 3 weeks.
- SMU Admissions Test (SMUAT): A simple 30-minute online test that doesn’t require preparation but on-the-feet thinking to test your verbal, numerical and critical thinking.
- Scholarships & tuition support with up to 30% of tuition fees offset
- Career Services where students are offered coaching, CV prep, interview training, internship matching - even if you’re launching a startup, the school supports you.
