Networking 101: How to Build Meaningful Connections Beyond Your Master’s Programme

5 Min SMU INSIDER: Student

By Adya Rastogi, Master of Science in Management (MIM) Student

It’s often said that your network is your net worth. But is networking really just about formal introductions and cold outreach?

In reality, meaningful networking is far more than surface-level interactions. It’s a skill that can unlock career opportunities, mentorship, collaborations—and even lifelong friendships.

And yet, the thought of entering a room full of strangers or making small talk can be daunting. Whether you’re just starting your master’s journey or already immersed in it, confidence takes time to build. Here are four practical ways to grow your networking skills and make meaningful connections—both in and beyond the classroom.

1. Build Connections with Peers and Professors

Your cohort is one of the most valuable networks you’ll have. With classmates from diverse backgrounds, industries, and cultures, every conversation can offer fresh insights and perspectives. Take the initiative to get to know your peers—their stories may surprise and inspire you.

Don’t overlook your professors either. Beyond their subject expertise, many are deeply connected within the industry and can offer mentorship, guidance, and even referrals for internships or jobs.

At SMU, you can also tap into campus clubs such as SMU ICON, which hosts events that promote cross-cultural exchange and integration for international and local students alike.

2. Make Your Introduction Memorable

First impressions matter—especially in networking settings. Rather than defaulting to a generic “Hi, I’m [Name],” try crafting a short, impactful introduction that reflects your interests or aspirations.

For example:
“I’m Adya, passionate about sustainable finance, and I’m here to explore how emerging markets are tackling climate-related risks.”

This kind of introduction invites deeper conversation and sets you apart from the crowd. Take time to rehearse your pitch before events—it boosts confidence and helps you show up authentically.

3. Follow Up and Stay Engaged

Networking doesn’t end with a handshake or LinkedIn request. Following up is key.

After a meaningful conversation, send a personalised message referencing something you discussed—it shows attentiveness and leaves a lasting impression. And don’t forget to be a good listener and show genuine curiosity.

Maintaining an active online presence, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, is also crucial. You’ll stay visible to industry professionals and keep up with hiring trends and career insights.

4. Take Advantage of Networking Events and Activities

At SMU, resources are readily available to help you grow your professional network. The Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre (DKHMCC) runs regular workshops and panels on networking, interviews, and industry insights.

You’ll also find plenty of opportunities through:

  • Career panels and networking mixers

  • The Alumni Mentorship Programme

  • Industry speaker sessions and masterclasses

These events not only help you sharpen your pitch and understand professional etiquette—they also open doors to job opportunities and career-defining conversations.

And remember: networking doesn’t always have to be formal. Some of the most meaningful connections are made in relaxed, social settings. The Office of Postgraduate Professional Programmes (OPGPP) organises unique activities—think hiking, koi farm visits, game nights, wine and cheese sessions, and bowling meet-ups.
