From the Philippines to SMU: Ella Martinez on Finding Her Path in the MiM Program

6 Min SMU INSIDER: Student

Choosing to pursue a master’s degree abroad is never just about academics. It is about stepping into the unfamiliar, embracing new cultures, and trusting that the journey will shape you in ways you cannot yet imagine. For many students, it is also about finding a place that feels aligned with both their professional aspirations and personal values.

At Singapore Management University (SMU), the MSc in Management (MiM) program brings together students from all over the world, each carrying their own stories, ambitions, and perspectives. This diversity is not just reflected in nationalities, but also in backgrounds, experiences, and the paths that led students to Singapore.

In this feature, we speak with Ella Martinez from the Philippines, a member of the August 2025 MiM cohort, as she shares her journey to SMU, what she has been learning inside and outside the classroom, and how she is making the most of her experience in Singapore.

1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself, including your background, where you're from in the Philippines, and what motivated you to pursue your master’s studies?

I’m Ella Martinez from the Philippines and I graduated from De La Salle University, Manila with a degree in Applied Corporate Management. I have close to two years of work experience in marketing and brand management; and even before working, I already knew I wanted to pursue a master’s degree.

I’ve always been driven by a strong curiosity and a desire to keep learning, and I saw postgraduate studies as a way to deepen my business knowledge and prepare myself for more strategic roles in the future.

2) What inspired you to pursue a master's degree in Singapore, and what ultimately led you to choose SMU’s MSc in Management (MiM) program?

I chose Singapore because it is one of the most advanced countries in Asia and serves as a regional hub for many global companies. Being here offers exposure to international business environments and opportunities to connect with professionals from diverse industries.

I was drawn to SMU’s MSc in Management program because of its strong industry focus and highly interactive learning environment. I valued the opportunity to learn alongside peers from different cultural and professional backgrounds, as well as from professors who are experts and practitioners in their fields.

3) What’s one class or module at SMU that has really stood out to you so far, and why?

One module that really stood out to me is ‘Managing People and Organizations’. It focuses on culture, leadership, and negotiation, which I believe are essential skills when working with diverse teams. The module helped me better understand different working styles and how to adapt my approach when collaborating with others.

Another module I enjoyed is International Business, particularly the discussions on headquarters–subsidiary relationships. This was very relevant, as it highlighted the strategic considerations and management systems required to align both global and local perspectives.

4) Are there any specific SMU resources like career services, clubs, or learning platforms that you’d recommend fellow students make the most of?

I would strongly encourage students to take advantage of the many initiatives offered by SMU, such as career fairs for internship and job opportunities, mentorship program initiatives, and even specialized postgraduate events for networking.

I would also recommend exploring part-time opportunities within SMU. As a Student Community Manager under the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, I’ve gained valuable exposure to working in Singapore and learned a lot from my supervisors and colleagues.

5) Outside the classroom, what’s one campus activity, club, or event you’ve really enjoyed being part of?

Outside the classroom, I’ve been actively involved in SMU’s co-curricular activities, particularly SMU Athletics and SMU Archery. I’ve also participated in postgraduate student events that bring together master’s students from different programs. These experiences have given me a welcome balance to academic life as it offers a space to unwind, connect with people from diverse countries and backgrounds, and build meaningful friendships across the university.

6) You’d mentioned that you’ve taken on the role of Student Community Manager alongside your Master’s, can you tell us what that involves and why you chose to get involved?

I chose to become a Student Community Manager under the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship because I wanted to step outside my comfort zone. The role allows me to grow both professionally and personally, as I work closely with staff members, founders, and innovators at the Jay & Marilyn Ng Greenhouse. I can then say that this role has given me firsthand exposure to Singapore’s startup ecosystem and strengthened my communication, coordination, and leadership skills.

7) How do you manage the balance between your studies, student responsibilities, and personal life? Any tips or hacks for keeping it all together?

There were moments when juggling everything felt overwhelming, especially at the start. One strategy that really works for me is maintaining a flexible daily routine.

While it’s not always the same schedule every day, having a structure helps me stay focused on my priorities (classes, responsibilities, and deadlines) while also reminding myself to rest and make time for activities that help me unwind and recharge.

8) As a Filipina student abroad, what has helped you feel most at home in Singapore so far?

The cohort onboarding sessions organized by the program office really helped me feel at home. Through these initiatives, I met people I eventually grew close to and now journey with throughout the program. We would even spend time together outside of school as we explore Singapore, try local food, and attend workshops together that made the transition much smoother and more enjoyable.

9) What’s one surprising thing you’ve learned about living in Singapore that you didn’t expect before arriving?

I’m still amazed by how convenient life in Singapore is, especially the transportation system. Getting around is extremely easy due to how efficient and well-planned everything is. I was also pleasantly surprised by how safe the country feels; you can leave your belongings unattended and people generally respect one another’s space.

10) If you could give one piece of advice to students from the Philippines who are thinking about applying to SMU, what would it be?

My advice would be to just take the leap and apply. It’s normal to feel unsure or scared about studying in another country, but trying is always better than not trying at all.

Once you’re here in Singapore, you’ll realize how adaptable you are, and things gradually fall into place. It’s a challenging experience, but also an incredibly rewarding one.

11) Last but not least, what’s your go-to spot for food on the SMU campus?

My go-to spots are SMU Connexion and Koufu as these food courts offer a wide variety of food options that are both convenient and value for money.

Ella’s journey reflects what the MiM experience at SMU is all about: growth, exploration, and learning in a truly global environment. From discovering new academic interests to taking on leadership roles and building friendships across cultures, her story highlights how students are encouraged to shape their own paths while being supported by a strong community.

For prospective students, especially those considering studying overseas, Ella’s experience serves as a reminder that taking the leap can open doors to opportunities far beyond the classroom. With its collaborative culture, industry-connected learning, and vibrant campus life, SMU continues to be a place where students can challenge themselves, broaden their horizons, and build a strong foundation for their future.
